From 3 to 24 June 2012, a unique temporary exhibition was staged at the Copernicus Science Centre. For three weeks, CSC visitors could watch bioart – an art movement in which science meets with art. This meeting gave birth to an unusual dialogue.
Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr are leading representatives of bioart. In 1996, they founded the Tissue Culture & Art Project at the University of Western Australia. In 2000, at the same university, they established the SymbioticA laboratory, making it possible for artists and scientists to conduct their research. In their works, they refer to such topics as bioethics, genetic engineering and biotechnology. They raise the question of opportunities and threats posed by modern science, while trying to tame their prejudices and fears. The “Crude Life” exhibition presents 10 of their retrospective projects, which consist of three works with living elements and documentary projects (objects and photographs).
