Here we will discover how mankind affects the environment, as well as how it affects us.
We will perform experiments in eight exhibition sections:
1. Future of Medical Technology
In this section, we will learn how we managed to achieve today's medical wonders. We will discover the opportunities presented to us by modern technologies and consider what they will bring in the future. We will learn about the structure and capabilities of the human body and its capacity for survival.
2. Urban Jungle
The natural environment we live in has changed greatly over the past few centuries. Nowadays many people in the world live in cities. How do we affect that urban environment and adapt ourselves to our new surroundings? How can we ensure that every city resident has enough running water, natural gas, or electric power? The interactive exhibits in this section will enable us to discover answers to these and other questions.
3. Human
The capacity for thought is an extraordinary trait of the homo sapiens species. But what is it that makes us think? Where lies the essence of human nature? Here we will learn about the physiological processes that underlie human thought and how thinking is linked to the level of iron in our body, the structure of our DNA, and the work done by individual cells.
4. Olympic Stadium
In this section we will discover the relationship between organisms and the environment they inhabit. We will look at the specific adaptive characteristics and capabilities of various organisms that can live under extreme conditions. We will be able to compete in many contests (running, high jump, reaction time, flexibility), against other visitors and also against various species of animals. Get ready for a real competition! The best results will be displayed in a prominent place at the exhibition.
5. Circle of Life
Here we will to take a close look at the miracle of how new life arises. We will follow the path of human development from embryo to birth, and also trace how the human body changes with age. We will learn why organisms age and what impact we can have on that process.
6. Anatomy Theatre
For our body to function properly, every structure, organ, and tissue needs to be doing a specific job. In this section we will peer deep inside the human body. The main attraction will be a operating room where will become a doctor's helper and assist in performing surgery.
7. The Brain and Senses
Here we will learn about and test our senses – our system for early warning about danger. Information gathered by the senses is recorded and interpreted by the brain, which makes all the decisions about our body. Yet many of our body's actions take place without our being conscious of them at all, such as breathing, the beating of our heart, and the operation of our internal organs…
8. Crime Lab
In this section we will be solving crime mysteries, tracking down criminals using state-of-the-art detective techniques. We will collect evidence, finding fingerprints and microtraces and testing DNA. We will also question witnesses and draw a composite sketch of a perpetrator's face. Will we manage to punish the guilty criminals?
The Humans and the Environment gallery is currently in the implementation stage. The interactive exhibits were designed and are being assembled by an industry-leading Dutch consortium of the companies Bruns and NorthernLight, while the multimedia content is being produced by the Dutch agency KissTheFrog. Some of the exhibits in the gallery are also being developed by the Copernicus Science Centre itself. Visitors will be able to explore and experiment in the gallery starting in the half of 2010, when the first module of the Centre building is launched (also including the LightZone, On the Move, Roots of Civilization galleries plus the Younglings exhibition). The Centre's Young Adult Gallery will be open to the public in the end of 2010.
