The Robotic Theatre is one of the most prestigious and original projects of the Copernicus Science Centre. This is a theatre played by robots, strictly speaking - RoboThespians, the RoboActors. The robots were developed in a British company Engineered Arts Ltd. Copernicus is responsible for preparing scenarios and the audiovisual setting for the shows. Dialogues were recorded in the Sonica Warsaw studio.
Samsung is the Partner of the Robotic Theatre.
- RoboThespian
RoboThespian
RoboThespian is a high-tech humanoid robot powered by compressed air and moving on a specially developed scene. It can walk, nod its head, make gestures and show its emotions.
It is the only one fully programmable humanoid robot of natural size that can be bought in the world.- Theatre objectives
The Robotic Theatre will be the permanent element of the “Roots of Civilization” gallery – the only one of its kind in Europe combining exact sciences with humanities. The Theatre is aimed at presenting important issues related to various fields of exact sciences and humanities in an emotional and thereby more intelligible way.
In addition, the Theatre will support and complement the education with works, authors and issues beyond the official curriculum.- Spectacles
“Prince Ferrix and Princess Crystal”
The scenario was based on one of the popular “Tales of the Robots” by Stanisław Lem under the same title. The character - the brave robot Ferrix, falls in love with a beautiful princess Crystal. However, the princess, despite she is a robot (a robot girl?), would rather marry bladawiec, i.e. a human, and ruthlessly eliminates all non human suitors. The reasons for this aberration are the impenetrable mystery for the robots, especially since the human race is the biggest enemy of the robot civilisation. However, disregarding the danger Ferrix decides to win Crystal’s heart by dressing up as… a human.
The story of the robot in love is the pretext for presenting history of mankind satirically: from the beginning of life on Earth to the age of Space explorers. Grotesque and humour are mixed with a serious reflection on the condition of the contemporary man. In the end, however (as usually in Lem’s books), kind reflection prevails - detached tone far from being pompous, created mostly by the characteristic language connecting the archaic fairylike style with the modern scientific and technical terminology.
Our spectacle will be also like the story – rather amusing, not gloomy, sometimes funny though not shallow, and sometimes calling for reflection.

author Szymon Felkel“The secret of an empty drawer – ghosts from the fourth dimension"
The scenario for the spectacle was based on the 19th century short story by Edwin A. Abbott: “Flatland. A Romance of Many Dimensions”. The character of the story – the Square from the Flatland – begins his journey to the third dimension. Things that we (living in 3-dimention world) consider normal and obvious seem to the Square to be incredible, unimaginable, mysterious and wonderful. Similarly to how incredible the 4-dimention objects seem to people (though mathematicians can describe space in any dimension).
Our spectacle will be the attempt to tell the story about these multi-dimensional worlds. The teenage characters of the spectacle – Tomek and Zosia – will find out about the possibility of the worlds existence as such. They will be surprised by the inexplicable (as it may seem) problem of the “vanished” pen. The mystery will be the beginning of the fantastic journey in the worlds of various dimensions the children will be taken to by their uncle Edwin – the character joining the features of a competent teacher and smart and kind friend. He is a true thinker who can “obtain” answers for difficult questions about the nature of space and the fact of dimensionality.
The spectacle will be of educational character. Therefore, the focus will be brought to the clarity of the performance, even at the cost of stylistic ease and visual impressiveness. Due to the level of knowledge in geometry necessary for the understanding of the lecture, the spectacle is intended for the students of the final grades of the primary school and the students of the first grade of the middle school (aged: 11-15).
